CSU Channel Islands: Dual Language Learning Professional Development

The Dual Language Learning Professional Development (DLLPD) for the California Early Childhood Workforce focuses on equipping early educators throughout the state with the skills needed to teach dual language learners in child care programs. 

Over 60% of children between the ages of birth and five in California live in a household where members speak a language other than English. The project focuses on offering a statewide undergraduate two-course sequence through CSUCIā€™s Extended University. The courses introduce students to current theory, research and policy to support dual language learners and effective strategies to use in the classroom. 

The courses are offered online and in-person, in both English and Spanish.

Program Model

  • Two sequential, one-unit undergraduate courses (consecutive completion required)

  • Five sessions per course, 10 sessions total 

  • Each course is online (or blended) and meets on a set day and time each week by web camera. All courses and content managed in myCI and Canvas 

  • Students are current early educators. Participation is zero cost to participants. Tuition and Textbook is covered by CA Department of Education Grant 

  • Two undergraduate CSU Channel Islands units and $600 stipend upon successful completion 

  • Director/Site Supervisor consent is required. Child care program must meet requirements, commit to pre- and post- program assessment, and complete Director Orientation. 

Requirements

  • Participating ECE programs are licensed to serve infants, toddlers and/or young children by providing family child care and/or preschool.

  • ECE program serves dual language learners 

  • Students are actively teaching in a classroom or has access to the classroom (e.g. Coach) 

Preferred Program Characteristics

  • CDE/ECLD contracted programs 

  • Participates in local Quality Counts Consortium 

  • Serving children receiving subsidies
